Leader of Your Pack
The Pecking Order
Dogs naturally take to pack pecking orders and your dog needs to understand his place in your pack. By
communicating to him the leadership and rules of the pack, he will be a happier, calmer dog. It is okay with him that
he is not the leader of the pack. Most dogs, unless they have a very dominant personality, do not want to be the
Alpha dog. The Alpha dog is responsible for feeding, sheltering and protecting the pack. That's a lot of
responsibility!!! Most dogs are happy to take the lower position in the pack, but they must understand where that
position is.
When we do not communicate effectively to our dogs just where in the pack they stand (and it is usually the very
bottom), they get confused, anxious and may try to gain leadership, because they (in their doggy minds) have no
leader.

Dogs are natural pack animals and in your dog's mind your family is his pack. Just as a pack leader in the wild
communicates to the other pack members that he is the Alpha dog, or a mother dog communicates to her puppies
that she is the Alpha dog, you too will learn to establish a leadership position in your pack.
You will establish leadership and teach your dog the rules (what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior) of your
pack by communicating with your dog using a dog's language.
